Science Fair 2014
Maya Sato
As a traditional event, Science Fair takes place every year at QISS. It is an opportunity for students who are talented in science to show their abilities in science field. Each group will accomplish an experiment or a scientific project, and will be evaluated by judges (teachers).Students use PowerPoint, Video or posters to present the whole process of their experiments. A science project should be practical and informational. Even though most of the students don’t prefer it at first, but they learn lots of academic knowledge during making their projects. In addition, at science fair day, every student represents what they did.
This year we had some few extraordinary experiments. For example, the first place of high school, received by Queenie and Yiner, made a refrigerator that is able to adjust its inner temperature. Through the Science Fair, we can see the creativity and talents of students, also their sensitivity.

Crazy Hair Day - Spirit Event
On
the March 7, 2014 QISS had a day of crazy hair. We had several types of hair on
that day and we had a winner. He was Kevin from grade 10. Some of the boys used
hair bands in order to make their hair look awesome and weird. Some girls made
their hair look as crazy as possible. A girl from lower school she made her
hair looked like a rocket, that was pretty cool!

Basketball Journal
Before
the winter break the boys’ team of QISS had a game with the staff team. We had
a lot of spectators watching the game. Teachers were very strong. They went
easy on the players on the basketball team. The gap was obvious; it was off
balanced which all showed on the scoreboard.
Jan 11 2014. The boys’ basketball team of QISS went to ISQ and had a game with the hosts. Though the results were not pleasant they earned experience. During the first quarter we were under control and play tough defense which lead to us having a 1 point advantage going into the second quarter. Since the first minute of the second quarter the other team started to press pretty hard on the sharks. Additionally, it seemed that baskets were higher than the ones in QISS. This was the first game for the team and the sharks were not very confident. As the sharks got tired their efficiency went down. Finally they lost the game by 10 points.
In the early February, 7 Sharks (5 boys and 2 girls) went to the Diamond Stadium and watched a pro game which was the Qingdao Double Stars Eagles team play against the Jiangsu Steels team. For many of the QISS player it was their first time to see live professional basketball. When the first half had finished their points were all above 70, which was amazing. The home team lost at the end. Each import players got scored about 40 points each. That was quite a show!
Feb 13 2014, both boys and girls basketball team went to Zeng Cheng, China to attend ACAMIS. Players went straight to the court after they got off the airplane. The weather was not warm and actually it was cold and rainy. When players arrived at the school they were surprised and a little disappointed to find the courts were outdoors. They had to wear shorts and jerseys while playing all the games. After the first 2 games both teams went to the hotel to warm up and get some rest before a busy weekend. In contrast to the basketball courts the hotel was brand new and very comfortable. Both teams played hard and tried their best. Players from the other schools were bigger and stronger. The Sharks could not win and against them. The last day of the tournament was the championship games for girls and boys. ISU girls’ team and HISB boys’ team won the finals. After all the games were finished, the hosts had a ceremony for all the players who attended ACAMIS. There was a prize presentation during the ceremony. All the teams from different areas agreed once again that QISS deserved the sportsmanship awards. The host had prizes for the most valuable players from each team. Michael Li and Soomin Kwak from QISS went up to the stage to join the rest of the all-star team. There was a dance party after the ceremony, everyone was surprised and enjoyed the festivities. All an all the boys and girls from QISS had a good time.
After Sharks came back from ACAMIS, they had another tournament which was the Qingdao Cup. The Sharks were tired but they gave good effort on the court. Although players had some conflicts with the Confucius (CIS), the Sharks still showed their sportsmanship. Both QISS boys’ and girls’ placed second and they got those awesome trophies. The boys from CIS displayed a low level of sportsmanship by being too aggressive to the point of trying to start fights but in the end they won the tournament. The girls from Yan Tai International School made the long journey worthwhile and won the championship.

QISS Middle
School Student Theater Performance
While winter is coming; it is necessary Christmas to celebrate. Middle school 8th graders performed a play called “The Christmas Carol“under the stage light in front of the QISS student body. The main character in the story is an old man named Scrooge (played by Alex Park) who lost his friend and started to hate happiness and Christmas. Also, the girl depicted wearing a blue dress (played by Ariel Kim) was a character that is a ghost who helped the old man to love the Christmas again.
There are also other cool characters like zombies and ninjas which were played by the 6th, 7th and the other 8th graders who were wearing black clothes.
Even though they are not professional actors, they showed their talents. Their moods, speech fluency and actions were nearly perfect. All of the audiences were attracted by the actors, and the stage lights realistically embellished the setting. The whole play, which was directed by the theater teacher Mr. Seal, can be called “very successful.”
After the whole play ended, the audiences gave a big applause for actors with several encores.

2013 Lock in & Talent Show at QISS. 11/28/2013
Lock-in
QISS, as usual, successfully arranged the annual lock-in on Friday, November twenty-second. It started right after the Talent Show, and ended on Saturday morning, November twenty-third. Participants were asked to sleep before 2 AM and wake up before 8 AM. A number of activities were held, including different sports (basketball, soccer, big-ball-soccer, badminton, table-tennis and dodge ball), rock-climbing at the first floor rock-climbing wall, a movie (“The Hunger Games I”) played in the theatre, and the coke-bon game between juniors and seniors.
All lock-in participants were divided into four teams, each team member can gain points for their teams by participating in different sports and games. Team one and Team four once had a tie since they all played very well and gained plenty of points during the big-ball-soccer games. At last, Team one won the first place by winning in the coke-bon game, and they got Pizza Party as reward on the following week, November twenty-eighth.
Two teams fighting against each other for the big ball on the field. (The players in the picture are: team one and team four.)
One high-lighting part in the lock-in was the rock-climbing. It was the first time of the rock-climbing wall being available for students. Surprisingly, most students who tried it got to the top, which helped them to gain points for their teams.
Two people were going up on two different sides of the rock-climbing wall. The one on the left is more difficult than on the right.
Talent Show: Under the stage lights
Before the lock-in was held, our extraordinary Talent show performed by tens of students from lower school to upper school took place in the QISS theatre. As usual, there were a number of different performances such as group dances, choir, solo-singing, instrumental performances and single-dances. It began with the single performance of Noah Rust from Grade 2, and ended with the group dance performed by juniors. At the end of 2013 QISS Talent Show we had the winner of the Talent Show T-shirt Contest (which was posting on the Chum Bucket): Paul Ham from Grade 11. Congratulations.
The group dance with costumes named “YMCA” performed by the Grade 11 class and two of their teachers, Ms. Rust and Mr. Mills.
Unlike last year and the years before where the only hosts were teachers, Matthew and Kevin, together with Mr. Shulist and Mr. Dunham, also played the role of hosts this year. There characters were the “host-robot”, Kevin, and the scientist, Matthew.
Kevin, “the host robot” was playing piano for his best friend, Matthew “the scientist”. Their performances were attempting and entertaining.
All of the students who participated in the lock-in said that they had quite a good time during the 2013 Talent Show and Lock-in since it gave them great memories with their school mates and teachers. Lastly, we have to say thank you to all the staffs, students, the QISS SGC, and everyone who helped to arrange it. They spent a lot of time and put great effort into it so that we could enjoy them so much.

ACAMIS Boy's Volleyball Beijing by Coach Anderson
Match 1 ASU
Our tournament début was to be against the scrappy and resourceful team from Mongolia, ASU. It was Sharks hitter Mathew Chick’s first game of the season and he was on a mission to prove his place on the court. He hit well from both sides and was able to add two impressive blocks against ASUS big hitting line. Playing low and fast Erik Zhou’s digs help the team stay alive in the third set. Competition was fierce in this match and the game saw the third set go right through to a dramatic 17-15 win for ASU. It was a tough loss but our sharks had proven to themselves that they belonged at this tournament and could compete with the best of them.
Match 2 HISB
The Sharks next game of the day came against the host school Harrow International school of Beijing. Harrow’s back line proved to be a hard one to get past, and early serving problems by our sharks meant a quick loss in the first match. But as seems to be the case with this tenacious team they pay their best with their backs against the wall, and with a nice serving rally by Andy Yang and a team defensive effort the Sharks were able to clinch a second set victory. However, in the third set our hosts proved to be just a bit too much for our sharks and closed the door on our comeback with a 15-8 win.
Match 3 DCSZ
After a few hard losses in tight matches our QISS sharks took their first big bite of victory in convincing fashion against Dulwich college of Suzhou winning two straight sets 25-18 and 25-23. Behind the leadership of team veterans Jorgen Beck and Mathew Chick our Sharks put the earlier losses of the day behind them and showed great poise and composure. In his tournament début Peter Hong help his team win a few key sets. Jorgen took a tumble late in the second set and needed a breather to recoup. In came team rookie Kevin Zhou. He showed he was up the task, backing up his teammate and moving well on the court. With Mathew Chick and Jorgen Beck blocking hard at the net Michael Li and Tony Song were tasked with digging tips and staying low and fast. And up to the task they were. This first team win was a total team effort; with each player playing his part. GO SHARKS!!!
Match 4. VS-CISB. 25-22 25-15
After three tough matches our boys were looking like there was not much gas in the tank for the fourth and final game of the day. Fighting through fatigue they stepped on to the court and tried to overcome tired legs by relying on one another for team support. In Sebastian Pederson’s first start of the tournament he set the ball well and even found himself a nice hit to tie the first set 15-15. Midway through the first set our Canadian opponents began to prove they could hit the ball, and hit it hard. The Sharks played hard to make the first set a close game but could not keep up with the Canadian teams hard hitting in the second set and lost 25-15.
Match 5. VS-ISU (25-16 25-18)
In pitted against the undefeated ISU our sharks were not intimidated by this lossless record, and fought hard in both sets. Jorgen Beck set the tone at the net with some big blocks early in the first set, letting our opponent know that big hits were not going to be an easy task. Coming of a hand injury Ace Kho came in to back up his teammate Erik Zhou. Ace was quick to shake of the rust and showed his team he was here to play, and play hard. The Sharks kept it close in the first match but were unable to compensate for ISU effective tipping. With adjustments made in the second set the Sharks stepped up and showed that they know how to adjust to this new scoring strategy. Michael Li and Seb Pederson had a few stellar digs of tipped balls. In the end, our Sharks found it difficult to find a hole in the armor of ISU and lost in the second set 25-18.
Match 6 VS-DCSZ (25-22 25-18)
Our second victory came in the last game of the tournament. It was a team effort with all players getting some time on the floor and putting in all they had. Mathew Chick’s net presence could not be matched and his down the middle serves were hard for SZ to handle. With the same calm and steady poise that he had exhibited all tournament team captain Jorgen Beck showed why he deserved to be MVP by leading his team to a decisive two set win.
