Have you seen the movie 2012? Yes? Are you afraid that it might happen? How many times have we thought the world would end? Many times. In the year 2000, also known as Y2K, people thought our planet was going to end, did it happen? No. So why do some people still believe in these kinds of myths? Maybe it’s because people are easily influenced by what they see in the movies or on the Internet? Lets take a deeper look into the myth.
The myth that the world will end on the 21st December of 2012 comes from the belief of the Sumerians that a planet called Nibiru is heading towards the earth. The end of the Mayan calendar and this Sumerian belief were put together to determine a dooms date, 21 of December 2012.
Why we believe it won’t happen
People have been saying that, based on the Mayan Calendar the earth will end on the 21st of December 2012. Any calendar you own also ends on the 31st of December, does that mean that the world would end on that day? No, the Mayan calendar is just like any other calendar, it has a beginning and an end, and people need to believe that. The NASA explained it in the following words:
“…The Mayan calendar does not cease to exist on December 21, 2012. This date is the end of the Mayan long-count period but then another long-count period begins for the Mayan calendar.”
NASA also claims nothing will happen because there is no scientific evidence to support the “2012 end of the world” theory as explained in this article.
The American space organization also clearly stated that “Nothing bad will happen to the Earth in 2012” because scientist believe that there is no real threat and also that our planet has been doing just fine for more than 4 billion years. The NASA is probably one of the most advanced organization when it comes to space, so is this article reliable? Certainly!
After the movie 2012 was out, people in China started spreading all kinds of rumors. Some said that all the people that had passed away during the year 2011 and 2012 are all preparing to ride on the Noah ship. It is the ship on the movie that's bringing people to the only safe place on Earth, Africa. The tickets to the ship were extremely expensive. People like Michael Jackson, Steve Jobs and all those people were thought to have already purchased the tickets and ready to save their own life from 2012. This was a famous rumor that was constantly spread on Weibo, the Chinese twitter.
There are also some people out there that have too much time on their hands and feel the need to pass on the idea that 2012, would be the day the world would end..
These are some ways that the Myth 2012 is perpetuated.
1. You can buy 2012 survival kits online. This is a contribution and a cause due to the spread of 2012. And you can buy survival kits for 2012 on this American website.
2. There are tickets on Taobao that cost from 0.1 RMB to 110,000,000,000 RMB. What is even more amusing is that some of these tickets were also purchased – of course the cheaper ones.
According to some websites, the start of 2012 is an explosion in Yellow Stone National Park; the sleeping volcano is going to erupt. It will not only influence the area around it but also the whole United States then Europe. With all those countries being influenced the economy will also be influenced. As those start, there will also be tsunami and lots of typhoon and also artificial disaster such as the train crash in China. These are all known to be the evidence of the start of 2012. Even the official news of the People’s Republic of China made a report on the news mentioning that maybe 2012 is true since the dead volcano in the Yellow Stone National is becoming alive and that once it erupts then the people living around will be unable to survive and the ash will spread to Europe. Maybe there will be another city in Europe becoming the city of Pompeii. However, NASA posted an online article informing people not to worry about the “Super Eruption.” They stated,
“Scientists have no way of predicting with perfect accuracy whether a super volcano will occur in a given century, decade, or year – and that includes 2012. But they do keep close tabs on volcanically active areas around the world, and so far there’s absolutely no sign of a super eruption looming anytime soon.”
